foedt i Kvaernes 25/11 1685
doed i Trondhjem 15/4 1743
Om ham opplyses, at han blev Student 1702, cand. theol 1704, Hoerer iTrondhjem 1706, Personalcappelan hos Faderens Eftermand i Kvaernes - Amund Barhow (se Side 1.), og reiste som beskrevet til Kjoevnhavn. Han kom til at predike for de Kongelige, vandt der Yndest, og blev 1715 udnaevnt til Sogneprest i Kalundborg.
i 1727 blev han Lektor Theol. og Notarius Capitule i Trondhejm. i 1728 Stiftsprost og Sogneprest til Domkirken og derefter Biskop i Trondhjem 1731.
Hagerup var en Mand med gode theologiske Kundskaper, og der siges om ham, at han paa sin kraftige Maade sagde om Folk angaaende at komme til Himmelen: "Du skal der ind enten du vil eller ei".

He got 17 children, but his wife died giving birth to the 17th. He also adopted at least one child, the later bishop to Christiansand, Eiler Kongel Hagerup.

E. Hagerup var misjonær hos samene og forbød disse å bruke en nylaget katekisme på Samisk. Denne var laget av sogneprest og misjonær Morten Lund. Samane skulle lære seg administrasjsonens språk; - Dansk! Det arbeid som hans forgjenger humanisten Thomas von Westen død (1727) var nå forgjeves.
Det skulle ta ca. 120 år før samene på nytt fikk ABC på Samisk, eller "det finske pråk" som administrasjonen kalte det.
